Sustainable farming in Ethiopia

Equal Exchange partners with the Oromia Coffee Farmers’ Co-operative Union (OCFCU) to bring you this organic Yirgacheffe® coffee. Founded in 1999, OCFCU is the largest Fair Trade coffee producer in Ethiopia and a direct exporter of its coffee, bypassing the central auction and giving more control and market share to the producers. Traditionally agrochemicals have never been used; instead environmentally sound methods have developed over generations and continue to thrive. All of the coffee is shade grown amongst acacias and oaks. The coffee bushes are interspersed with plants such as cardamom and ginger, fruits such as papaya, mangoes and avocadoes, and root crops such as sweet potatoes. This intercropping helps to enhance the fertility of the soil, further enriching this already chemical free area.

Roasting Block Goes Here

At our solar-powered roastery in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, our worker-owner team batch roasts and conducts production cuppings daily to bring out the best characteristics in each harvest. With four primary roast levels, we think there’s a favorite here for everyone. Obviously this needs to be updated for UK roasting.

Medium Roast: expect the unique citrus, nutty, fruity, or floral notes of each coffee to shine through.

Full City Roast: you’ll get a bit more of the caramel flavor that comes from the roasting process.

Vienna Roast: starts to bring the smoky aroma and smooth and rich body of a darker roast.

French Roast: with the natural oils fully expressed, it’s an intensely dark and smoky experience akin to dark chocolate.
